I didn’t know I was considered a “high achiever” I just knew I couldn’t sit still. My mind raced with ideas for books, movies, songs, stories, inventions and all sorts of ideas. I thought it was normal, because it was my normal to have my mind constantly going. My first taste of Yoga was when I went to a Bikram (HOT yoga) class when I was barley 20. It was hard, I sweated a lot and was sure I was going to pass out. The intense physicality of this style of class interested me, but it wasn’t until years later when i took a more traditional flow of yoga that I learned the value of slowing down. Moving into hard to reach positions forced me to focus on my breathing. My mind still raced, but I experienced a sliver of peace. For just a moment I was able to just lie there on my mat and just be. What is this magic I thought? Can I allow myself to rest? Is there value in this? These were some of the questions that started me on my yoga journey But it wasn’t until I discovered Karma Yoga in Denver, Colorado several years later that I realized there is more to yoga than just stretching and meditation.
